Seminar on biotechnology in sustainable agriculture

How can biotechnology contribute to better health and a cleaner environment? And how do consumers view its use in food production? The Mistra Biotech programme hosted an international seminar looking at the latest findings on biotechnology in farming. A potential new oilseed crop, field pepperwort, was discussed, as was the question of how new potato varieties could improve health and the environment. Other topics covered were the role of nitrogen-efficient cereals and DNA analysis in making food production more sustainable, consumer attitudes to the use of biotech in the food sector, and the precautionary principle in the context of plant breeding.
